There is much speculation on this point. It was decided at license renewal that LucasArts and SOE would choose to close the game. Population was not progressively growing and it was finally known that TOR was being released. So as TOR launched, SWG closed. This would allow LA to be more free to promote the only Star Wars MMO in the market while SOE could free server resources for its future games.
What has been widely assumed, is EA had a non-competition clause with LA once a new deal had to be signed as they purchased Bio-Ware. EA bought Bio-Ware as it became known TOR was in development.
SWG has a long (10 years or so) history of ups and downs with much bias and rumor along the trail. What can be said is LA was never satisfied with its performance once World of Warcraft launched.
Even if EA was to build an SWG-type game remember their bread and butter is and always has been the madden franchise. they will not let anything mess that up. they make good games and they do listen to their players otherwise madden wouldnt have been around for as long that it has been. and to this day remains the top football franchise. not sure how they would fare making an mmo. i hope for the better.
With now exclusive rights to EA for all Star wars games I doupt that we will see any SWG2 type (or any good Star Wars game) anytiem soon. I was hoping that Disney does not continue the mistakes made when SWTOR was launched. Game quality has never seen any benifit from exclusive rights to one company and EA has certainly not the best record as of late.
The only emulator that really matters is SWGemu, and it often has so many people at login a que has developed. Yet despite the population, there has been no action from LA. On the other hand, maybe Disney will have a more flexible approach. The indefatigable subsequent point of an emulator is no new content will ever truly exist, and you're just picking over the bones of a once great MMORPG -- which is why I would like SWG to action make an actual comeback with Disney / SOE. Disney shouldn't have all of the hangups and pet peeves that LA had, which ended up damaging the MMO for LA / SOE. LA's hangups and pet peeves are why we have a multi-milllion dollar failure in SW:TOR -- a dull, static, sterile "MMO" themepark.
There are multiple emulators out there... Maybe if we all supported and played on one like protject swg (http://www.projectswg.com/) So the community can live again and perhaps Disney/Soe see the popularity of it. If not it will never be the same but at least we have a chance wandering around in Mos Eisley once again...
I am all for SWG to come back somehow. However, the MMORPG market is starting to dry up. At the very least SOE is trying to make a stab at the sandbox type MMO with Everquest Next, as they say. But it is very disheartening to see games close and or companies go under as of late. With what happened with LucasArts, I tend to fear the worse for gaming.
I complete argree with you notes Nykara those things made SWG great and I miss them I have great memories with the game for those topics, the space was great especially when you had a larger ship and had friends ombord it was so awesome.
Swtor will never be able to change into that....
We can only hope that disney want's to do a new SWG MMO set in the sequel trilogy with the style of SWG so SWG 2.
The Truuth I argree with you too! The Emulators just can't be the same and even though history has shown that no matter how big a fuss we make big corperations usually refuse to listen. We should still try though. The thing is though as for SWG it seams like there is only a relativily small passionate group whom want it back so it might be a harder job then Battlefront 3.
Can someone please build a website with literature that we can provide to Disney in which a Star Wars game that encompasses many of the Star Wars Galaxies game play models. I.E player housing, open world, space travel and combat, many professions to choose from, player and world driven crafting to enforce economy. And please, keep the Jedi as to being a secret profession with evolving ways to obtain the profession. Starting a MMO as a Jedi is nonsense.
I will be honest, I miss SWG for what it was, and I dislike SWGEMU for what it is not.
All of us obviously are true Star Wars fans so I believe that we should all make an effort to let it seriously be known to Disney. Sandbox MMO games are some of the most exciting. Lets keep it that way.

I wont comment on swtor because like most of you other swg fans I had plans on playing it and was looking forward to it up until swgs murder was announced i swore that day i would not infect my computer with that filth and to this day have not done so even with others trying their best to recruit me I mean the game must have sucked really bad even before laucnch if it was decided to shut down swg just to trick the weak minded of us to go over to play it. my eldest son is 9 now and he too shares my feelings for swg he began playing when he was just 3 and by 5 he was running instances with the guild and a fully capable member of the team. but to leave all that aside i just wanted to say i also had multiple accounts i had 6 and always had at least 3 of them online at all times but since swg shut down i have tried but with no luck to find myself another mmo to keep me interested as swg did no other game has the community like swg no other game ive played since swg has kept my interest for more than a month dont get my wrong i still play a few but not for the game mainly just because i have friends from swg that play and its better than nothing la come on man u gave the swtor thing a shot it was crap i predicted it and you didnt listen so here is another prediction and you should listen to this one SWG2 same game better graphics hell you want to feel like you made some big change fine whatever make the game some 20 or 30 years after all the books that way we have a rich history to work with and the future events of the game wont be held back creatively by story lines that have already been written
SWTOR should have shown that yet another copy product of the same type MMO is also no success. It is interesting that people often call the sandbox MMOs games without a future. I think that if someone were to finally bring something new to the MMO market the best chance is to re-visit the sandbox idea and build something new.
Well, guess it won't be LA, but to be honest, LA value add to the recent games was unfortunately low. Lets see what the future holds.
You're not likely to get a response either, unless it's one of those canned autoresponder messages.
The sad fact of the matter is that the game will not be "back" in any official way. It will be up to the EMU-type folks to keep the true SWG running. But that might not even be assured. I doubt any one of the groups making a version of SWG has the rights to a license for the IP. Ultimately, it may be only a matter of time before Disney steps in and shuts them all down.
This thread has a long and storied history to it. But one need only read through some of the pages of old to see why SWG as it was once known will not return. Right now, the facts are that SWTOR is the official licensed MMO that we have and until the license expires are likely to have. Eve Online is the best example of a successful sandbox MMO, and even they have only just finally reached half a million subs. The sandbox genre is simply not sustainable enough for an MMO started in the modern age. It will only be a niche product and I doubt that Disney will be looking for Niche when licensing out the IP - it will simply be too expensive for any company to recoup the costs unless they make a game with a broader appeal. At best that would be SWG NGE, which, as we can see was the nail in the coffin for the game - it just managed to straggle along for another few years before finally being put out of its misery.
I have no doubt that we will see another Star Wars MMO, but it will not be classic SWG just as it won't be SWTOR 2.
I still miss the game! I can't believe they closed it after saying it would remain open as long as people were playing. Has anyone emailed Disney about bringing it back? I did, but have not gotten any response.
I would pay and play again in a heartbeat and so would everyone else I know who played. This game deserves life! Revive SWG, it would make MMO history and bring a lot of publicity in for Lucasarts and Disney
A SWG 2 designed based on SWG with the many choices the game had for character development, crafted items and great space combat + some of the later added deatures from just before SWG closed would be a great game (if done right).
Star Wars Galaxies was a game that I had dreamed of long before it was ever made a reality and I have to say that the early Development team seemed to have Star Wars fans in mind when they were building the game. You could do about anything and we all had dreams of more and more things being available.
Unfortunately, for some people, this was not what they wanted and they complained early and often. From my understanding, the SWG forums were some of the most active forums ever. I bet there are few that rival what we saw on the SWG forums. There were a faction of us (me included) that spent almost as much time posting about the game as actually playing the game, and actually continued to pay for the right to do so. In short, people cared about this game.
I even knew of people that played SWG that had never even seen the movies. They just thought that it was the best science fiction based game they had ever played.
Well, IMHO, I think that someone decided to listen way too much to the negative posts and not nearly enough to the positive posts and things went quickly awry after launch. It seemed to me that the DEVs worked way too hard on things that the real fans of the game didn't care much about. When the things they had worked on didn't seem to stop the complaints... The first major game change came about - with disasterous results... though I think most of us got used to it and started to even like it. Well, again, they abandoned this game change and went to the amazingly absurd NGE - which just wasn't ready for prime time, so to speak. Many say that it got really good after a couple years of development went into it but it was too little, too late and then bang - our dreams were blasted into space dust.
Space was another problem, I think primarily because it wasn't available at launch. There are people out there that would still pay just to keep playing the space part of the game TBH.
If SWG would have stuck to its original vision and just changed the things slowly, over time, it very well could have been great. Both major game changes caused major exoduses and bad will that the game couldn't afford.
In the early days, even if you didn't have fun in the quest system, or the PvP, or the world combat, or crafting... you could go and hang out with old and new friends at MANY cantinas and hospitals. There were times I looked forward to waiting on shuttles (something that was removed due to complaints) because of the insanity that people came up with while being cued up.
Player interaction had to be the best thing in SWG, by far. It seemed that a lot of the "improvements" kept putting up hurdles to that interaction. Role playing was also taken to new heights for an MMORPG by SWG. There were innovations in role playing tools right up until the end that were amazing.
I'd simply love to see SWG2. If they would go from the original game's goals and expand on it with some changes made, hopefully by learning from all the years in between then and now and all the games that have come and gone, it could be a truly amazing game.
I certainly do not see this kind of excitment for the revival of any other "dead" games. At least not at this level.
