Monkey won't trade the key for the banana (Crystal Skull part 2)

I'm in the Crystal Skull part 2 hub and I can't get across the pit to continue the game. There's a monkey in the tree above with the key I need, but when I toss the banana I picked up near the beach to him he holds onto both the key and the banana and won't throw the blasted key down to me.

Any help would be very welcomed!
