After getting the startup error on Vista I did a bit of hunting and came up with a solution.

The problem is obviously to do with the underlying sound system and the fact that microsoft have ripped out great parts of this for Vista.

Anyway, I was pointed towards replacing the Mss32.dll file in the KOTOR2 program directory with the version that can be found here:

http://files.filefront.com/Mss32dll/;6695046;;/fileinfo.html

I believe it is an updated dll for the Miles sound system which drives the game.

Works great for me and should be an easy fix for lucasarts to sort in a small patch.

Have fun!

This sounds like the solution! I have downloaded it but how do I install it?

Just put it in the folder where the game is installed to (default is c:\Program Files\LucasArts\SWKotOR2) replacing the file present there.

Hi,

I'm not sure if your error relates to mine or not. When I insert the play disk into my DVD drive and try to start a game I get the following error message appear in a pop up window:

Please remove disc from current CD/DVD drive and insert the original disc in another drive?

I sent an email to the LucasArts Support site and their reply was to change the compatibility - I had already done this to Windows XP (Service Pack 2). I downloaded the updates as well for SWKOTOR2. Their response to this was to advise that they do not support the game in Vista. However it sounds as though there are people capable of playing this game in the Vista OS. Has anyone come across this error before? Was there a fix?

Me either.

I can get through character creation and the first video...then I get the 'has stopped working' message...

Azural15:
Please do the following: click the Windows icon in the lower left corner -> enter dxdiag. When a new window appears, click Save All Information. This will create a DxDiag.txt file. Save it somewhere (for example on your desktop) and post it's contents in this thread. It will take more than one post.
