That wont work. Virtual PC does not support 3D acceleration and it is only experimental in Virtual Box. Besides, you must use virtual box's 3D driver. It is only available for XP, Vista and Seven guests and you must install it in safe mode.

Did not work for me.

I have no doubt that the future for gaming these old windows 95-98 games are virtual machines but as for now, the best way to do so, is on an old PC.

I do have an old computer just for old Star Wars gaming, cheaper and less time consuming than trying to do the impossible.

Greetings.

Did you install your 3D driver into the virtual OS?

Or you simply tell all those idiots who cry w7 is a must have where to shove it and do what every experienced computer techie does: Stick to the system that works, as opposed to the system that doesn't.

The reason many of us refuse to 'upgrade'(more like downgrade) is because so many things simply do not work on 7.

It may be overkill but I use a Virtual PC with windows XP installed. That dosen't take more than 10 gb of space and I can play every classic game.

Like I said. This may be overkill but if you're like me you REALLY like older games.

You can also play this game on windows 7 64 bits with radeon x1550 or x1300.

I think it's the good generation of GPU (dircteX 9). Perhaps it can run with a radeon x1950 ?

Hello.

1.- SW EP1 Racer can running on W7 64 bits with Unofficial MSI Setup v1.0.0.0 by Markus Egger

2.- You can run Racer with all OS (W95 to W7).

Compatible cards Radeon 9XXX series like 9600 or 9200, Some Radeon HD 2400 Pro like Club 3D, Intel on board, some Nforce 6150 le on board.

If you want playing new games with a new GPU, You must have 2 GPU : One on PCI-E slot and One on PCI slot or On board.

This error actually exists even on the Mac versions of the game.

Oddly enough i have a uhm, "Backup" version of the game that works, and a retail one that doesnt. On the exact same system. But that's becoming less an exception and more a rule these days...

This problem seems to be a very common inssue with the 8000 and 9000 series of Nvidia.

For all of you using an Nvidia card, the last working drivers with this game is the 186.18. Anything more recent is incompatable. So if you really want to play this game, you have to downgrade your videocard drivers. (as in uninstall and install the old ones, which oyu can find int he Nvidia archive..)

And if you're running an x64 bit system, don't even try.

About the Visual C and such, a game this old, the newer versions weren't even designed to work with this so you HAVE to install the old ones. Which might mean uninstalling the current ones, installing the old ones and then installing the new ones. (NOT UPDATE!)

Hello ... thanks a lot for trying to help but it's still not working :-((
Maybe I've made a mistake somewhere so this is all I've done :

Note that I use daemon tools for all games installations and playing purpose but I really got the original CDs, and the image has been done from my own CDs.

I've installed the game properly with the original CD image
I've set all *.EXE in the SWR directory to compatibility for 95
Changed all the driver settings to compatibility modes (unable 3D accellerations feature as anti aliasing, threading, multi GPU support etc) in the NVidia Configuration Pannel.

Ran the game displayed me the "Unable to open display for 3D" message

Tried compatibility with 98 for all *.exe

After that I Replaced the " a3dapi.dll " and the " SWEP1RCR.EXE " files in the game folder, as it seems to be the way to patch the game (see that on other forums, topic)

With the same driver settings and compatibility modes, same result --> "Unable to open display for 3D"

Then ... I tried your method, carrefully read the instruction first in order to create a new installation cd.

Here some points that I may have not done the right way.

My system is up to date with Microsoft Windows Update Site. So when I tried to install "Windows Installer 3.1 Redistributable" and "Microsoft Visual C++ 2005 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)" It may not have worked for newer version are already installed. For MSI I got an error message saying it was not usefull to be installed stopping the installation program. For C++ I had no message but the installation seemed to end oddly. Both don't appear in the Program unistallation list in the config pannel. But I got newer versions.

When copying the content of CD into the "racer" folder for new installation CD, I had no protection files mentionned. So didn't have to skip them.

Finaly I'm not sure where had the "support" directory to be located, I put one in my Temp dir in windows and add a /temporary/support directory in the root of the "new install CD" (i.e. "Racer").

I burn it on a RW CD and made immediatly an image of that CD (using nero so I got a .nrg file.
I took care about the right CD label (racer100_0) and re installed the game with the new image (and then run the game with the old image, the one form the original CD).

And ... fail ... still got that bloody "Unable to open display for 3D" message

So Did I make something wrong ? Should I have uninstall and reinstall the game at every step ?
(I don't think that registered keys should affect the program itself).

Last thing : I've read too that it may be possible using an old PCI card in a free slot ... but it would mean buying a new card and installing it (I'm not even sure I got an usable free slot as new motherbords leave few room to install cards even if slot is free). Could that be the last chance ?

By the way ... longer before having the display error message I got that "white screen" bug that made the game unusable (everything starts well but when the race begin ... bam ... just seeing the road and listend to music but no Podracer and no controls working). Anything for that bug ? Even my older computer cannot run that game ... :-((

Why games like Unreal Tournuament or Counterstrikes should still be working and that one do not ? The compatibility problem should be the same, isn't it ??

Is the only thing left is ... to forget it ?

Hello ... of course running an old game on a new operating system and new hardware may not be something easy ...

But it seems that game can work on some systems an won't on some others where it should.

I've heard of people who can make it work even with Vista or Seven ... When I bought the game it was said it could run with 98 and XP ... but I've never been able to make it work with XP.

Of course the génération of GPU and CPU may interfer a lot but the primary compatibility with the OS should alllow it to work with a patch that adapts the game to newer GPU, right ?

Anyway ... I would just have some help to run it properly on my new config if it is possible (without the need for a Win 98 multiboot)

I got a i7 CPU (with Asus P7P55D-E Deluxe motherboard) and a sparkle Silent Nvidia 9500 GT GPU
Of course running a fully updated windows XP (SP3).

Is it possible to make it work, and if it is how ^^ ?

Thanks a lot for answers

I'm always amazed at how many people seem to think an old game will just work perfectly on a new operating system.

An old windows 95 game won't work properly on windows 7.... This game was not even designed for XP, let alone Vista or W7. The odds that it will work properly are below 5%. It's a miracle in itself if the game will even start.

Now. have you tried: Compatability mode. Changing your videocard settings (he driver, not the game). Patching the game.

If the answer is yes to all those, try the installer on this site.. Be sure to read the instructions first.
