Hello, friendly LucasArts forum members!

In an effort to make the Feedback Forum less of a source of frustration for both members and mods, we are starting an Answers to Frequently Asked Questions thread. Here you will find responses to the most common questions that are asked. Before making your own post, please check this thread to see if we answer your question. You may also want to consult the Forum FAQ for other basic questions about registration, rules and locked accounts.

You can use "Ctrl + F" to search for certain keywords. That will allow you to find an answer even quicker.

Thanks!

  • Can I change my screen name?

No, I'm afraid you can no longer change your screen name. Read this news article for more information.

Do not create a new account to circumvent the loss of the name changing feature. That would constitute socking (paragraph III.6. of the Forums FAQ) and will be dealt with accordingly.

  • - I posted in Forum Feedback, but my post hasn't shown up. *

Forum Feedback posts have to be approved by an administrator or moderator before they are made public. Not all posts are made public for a variety of reasons, but rest assured, they are all read and reviewed.

  • - Where can I make a complaint about an unruly poster? *

If you feel someone is trolling or spamming or breaking the rules of the forums, please feel free to post a thread in Feedback. All threads are read by the moderators and if you've got a complaint, it will be reviewed and action taken if necessary. These threads are for moderators' eyes only and will not be approved for the public to see.

- My reports here of redundancy and improper behavior are anonymous, right?

Truly anonymous? No. Mods can see your screen name attached to posts you make here, just like anywhere else on the boards. On the other hand, we don't approve such reports for general viewing, and we usually delete them outright once we're through dealing with the situation. So you don't have to worry about trolls seeing your name attached to the report and subsequently harassing you, because the only people who will see the message are mods.

- Tip: How to report inappropriate behavior.

  • How do I quote someone's post?

Copy/paste what you want to quote, then place that text in bold. Write your reply beneath that. Many people still do that, but you could also click on the "Quote Original" button after you've clicked on Reply.

  • How do you bold/italicize/underline?

When you click "reply", look directly above the text field. There are Bold, Italic and Underline buttons.

Select a bit of text and click on the button of your choice.

Of course, nothing stops you from inserting the tags manually.

  • How do you post a URL link?

Simply type in the URL (and be sure to include the http:// prefix).

For example, this doesn't work: www.lucasarts.com

But this does: http://www.lucasarts.com

There is no special code, just type in or copy and paste the address. The system automatically turns it into a link.

  • How do I make text into a link?

Use the following tag;

++url=http://www.lucasarts.com++LucasArts Official Site++/url++
LucasArts Official Site

Or select the text you want to be a text link and click on the URL button. Provide the hyperlink at the prompt (http:// included) and click on OK.

  • What is this TDE I see in thread titles?

"TDE" is a visual indicator to tell you this thread is part of that forum's topic directory. That way, no matter how you've found the thread, either by searching, or browsing, or the topic directory, you know you've found one of the focal points of conversation on a particular topic.

- I see people posting "bump" from time to time. What does that mean?

"Bump" is a post that does nothing else but recycle a thread to the top of the forum. Threads with the very latest replies go to the very top.

That being said, "bumping" is only allowed in certain cases. Frivolous "bumping" is frowned upon. This includes doing it so that your own thread moves to the top to get more replies, or doing it to someone else's with no other intention that to reposition the thread. If you want to reply to a thread, please say something to constructively add to the conversation.

- What is a lock?

When a topic is locked, that means that discussion can no longer take place on that topic.

- Why do threads get locked?

Threads get locked for a number of reasons. Sometimes there are off-topic or in the wrong forum. If that's the case, the moderator who locks the thread generally points you in the right direction.

Sometimes threads are redundant (meaning discussion on that topic is already taking place in another thread such as the numerous "Is there going to be a KOTOR 3 game?" threads). Please look around a bit before posting a topic. Redundant topics get locked.

Sometimes threads are started by trolls for the purpose of stirring up trouble. These threads are locked and sometimes even deleted.

- Why do you lock threads that are getting close to 10,000 posts?

Because if we don't, the thread sort of becomes a SuperInvincibleThread -- it gets nearly impossible for a mod to delete posts within the thread. Now this might sound cool, but what it means is that a troll can come in and spam your thread, and we mods will be unable to get rid of the posts. So we lock posts that get too big. The thread can then be restarted, and discussion continues as normal.

Threads are now auto-locked at 10K posts, but the above is still valid. And we usually take care of threads before they're auto-locked, so you probably won't notice the new feature anyway.

- I have a thread that's getting really big. What should I do?

Normally, the mods are aware of these kinds of threads and will let the folks in the thread know that it will be locked shortly. However, if you think we don't know about the thread, feel free to post in Feedback and let us know.

Because of the auto-lock feature, it may happen that you find yourself without a certain topic. You can either wait until the re-start is taken care of or re-start it if you think we or anyone else involved won't mind.

- How do you lock?

Only moderators and administrators can lock and delete topics.

- Is there censorship here at the LucasArts Message Boards?

Yes, Forum Moderators have the ability to edit, lock or delete posts and threads submitted to the board using the Forum Terms of Use as a guideline.

The LucasArts Forum Terms of Use can be read here: http://www.lucasarts.com/legal/ter ms/

Feel free to comment/complain about how things are censored, here in Forum Feedback. But please do not expect that anyone will have the right to submit posts to the board without them being subject to review.

This being said, we want folks to post on the boards and voice their opinions. It's incredibly easy to post a thread that won't be deleted, locked, or edited. Please note the literally thousands of threads that have not been edited or locked as proof that anyone can participate and enjoy their experience here at the official LucasArts web site.

  • Help, help, I'm being repressed! You Nazi mods are violating my First Amendment rights!!!! I should (sue/get my cousin to sue/get my lawyer friend to sue) you!!!

No, we're not. First of all, your amateur lawyer act is kinda pathetic, since you'd be laughed out of court if you even tried to sue for getting banned on a message board. Second, this is the internet, not the United States. And third, you don't have any idea what the First Amendment actually guarantees you, anyway.

Amendment I
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

That clause is extended under the Due Process clause of the Fourteenth Amendment, which reads ...

Amendment XIV
No state shall make or enforce any law which shall abridge the privileges or immunities of citizens of the United States...

forums.lucasarts.com is not Congress. Neither is it a state. Neither are you petitioning the United States government for a redress of grievances. You don't have a leg to stand on. Go away.

  • - Okay, I won't sue. But I want your really cool super-powers of moderating goodness. How do I become a Mod? *

Spend a lot of time on the boards. Really, that's it. If you show you're mature and can handle the responsibility, it will be bestowed upon you. But don't ask us - chances are we'll say no.

- Can I sell or rent items on these forums?

These forums are NOT for selling items or renting servers or posting links to auctions. Please do not attempt to set up transactions here. There are many sites set up to do this, including a popular auction site with the letter "e" in its name. Transaction-type threads will be locked and may be deleted outright.
