That was it, it completely fixed our game on the computer. Tested on flights, battles, maps, worlds, not one freeze up. Our Audio was on Modem#1 I believe. Fixed that, went straight to game to options, and put Mixer to Software, didn't even reboot, and all worked great!!!

i'm glad i could help. But i would like to be of even more service to all of u and fix your audio problem as well. Because i just fixed mine!!! Not sure if this fix will apply to all but i think at least one of u because when i glanced at ur little snapshot of computer thing it was very simialer to mine (coosman). and the rest of u people should just try this solution because it is extremely simple.
here's my sound card - realtek ac97 audio (try solution even if sound card is not the same)
1.Get to sound and audio devices (it's in control panel, lol)
2. Audio tab
3.At top it says:
sound playback
Default device
(drop down menu)
mine was on either "modem #0 line playback" or "Modem #0 handset playback" (sorry don't remeber which one, not really that important.
4. use the drop down menu to click on an actual brand of audio card, in my case the "Realtek AC97 Audio"
Push apply and ur done
because most people will have differen't audio cards i can't garuntee that it'll work for all. Good luck
after fixing this issue i have no problems with the game it's real cool, and the multiplayer is smooth even on a average comp. good job lucasarts (and other company's)

I am having the same "crash to Desktop" that is prevalent throughout this forum on BFII. The menu comes up but selecting start crashes it. I've tried the fixes to setting the processors to "1" but still have same issue.
Can I try anything else before LA develops a patch?

Hey guys,
great information, can you list out your sound cards please?
Only if disabling sound cures your problems.
I see one of you has a realtek.

Holy jeez...
CONFIRMED! Disabling the sound made the game work for me on 2 machines.
Setting it to "Hardware Mixer", however, causes the game to crash. I have to disable it, then it works on all machines. (That, and circumventing Securom to fix the "incompatibility" issues, of course)

I just Figured out the same thing tonight God_of_The_Jedi. Mine always crashed to desktop when i try to start any game. Figured out that if you disable the audio mixer option the game runs fine. Tried to update sound drivers, made no difference. Hope they sort this problem out soon. Not as much fun without sound.

yes, i've had the same problem as well, but i also have found a partial solution. After it exited to windows about 4 times i ran the test thing and everything came back fine. So i decided to play around with a few setting's in game. and eventually i found that it was the audio doing it. surprised? i'm sure (if u have the same problem as me) that if u go to ur audio options thing in game, and u turn the mixsound (or whatever it's called) option from "software" to "disable", ur game will run fine. some with better sound cards maybe able to use the hardware option, instead of disabling it, i was unable to.
BF2 is fun, but without sound i don't know if it's worth keeping, so i'll probably return it, unless a solution to our problem is posted here, or i'm made aware of one.
hope this helps

Exact same problem I'm having. I can mess around with all the options, but when I click on Training or try to start a game, it crashes.

Crashes from Menu screen

As per quite a few posts already on the forum, I only seem to get as far as the menu screen. I can select and modify anything on the menu areas, but any time I try to start playing the game it crashes to the desktop. Clicking on 'training' drops it straight the desktop, instant action will let me into the menu screen but when I try to play from there it drops to the desktop again... really beginning to annoy me now!
Tried starting with the safe mode option but get exactly the same results...
Downloaded the latest graphics drivers but that made no difference. System report as below, I also have the DXdiag report if needed.
